Research & Awards

Dr Lim’s research interests in Neurology & Sleep Medicine include Sleep Disorders in the Singapore population, Adolescent Sleep Problems, Restless Legs Syndrome, Sleep & Headaches, Sleep Disorders in Parkinson’s Disease, and Neuromuscular Diseases in Sleep Disorders. She has received numerous research grants for her research in Sleep Medicine and Neurology (in Headaches and Epilepsy), from the National Sleep Foundation in the United States, the American Headache Society, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Research Programs Council and the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) in Singapore. Her research work in Restless Legs Syndrome, Headaches and Epilepsy has won top Neuroscience Research awards in consecutive years at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in the United States. She was the Principal Investigator of the first NMRC funded clinical research study looking at Sleep Patterns in Parkinson’s Disease and Normal Controls in Singapore.

During her fellowship training years at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Lim studied large and small nerve fibre function in patients with Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) using laboratory electrophysiologic techniques including electromyography and studies of autonomic and small fibre nerve function, mentored by Dr Nancy Foldvary-Schaefer and Dr Robert W. Shields. This association between RLS, one of the most common and frequently overlooked sleep disorders, and peripheral neuropathy has long been recognized but not well characterized. Dr Lim was awarded the prestigious Pickwick Postdoctoral Fellowship (2002-2004) by the National Sleep Foundation to study Neurophysiological Correlates of Restless Legs Syndrome.

Currently she is studying the impact of different personality types upon disease, and exploring the emotional and spiritual roots of disease, with a view to a holistic approach to restoration of health.

Future: 2023 & Beyond

Having returned to Singapore in 2004 after 7 years training in Neurology, Neurophysiology, Neuromuscular Diseases and Sleep Medicine in the United States, Dr Lim has spent the subsequent years since in clinical practice and teaching, helping to raise levels of awareness of Sleep Disorders in Singapore through the combined efforts of local healthcare professionals interested in Sleep Medicine, and the Singapore Sleep Society, in promoting Sleep education and research in Singapore. She has remained actively involved in clinical practice, teaching and research in the field of Sleep Medicine and Neurology. Going forward, Dr Lim continues to be an advocate for Neurology and Sleep Health in Singapore. She believes in a holistic approach to health, with the philosophy that good sleep is an integral component of good health, optimal brain function and balanced living. She fully endorses Quality Sleep, Regular Exercise and Healthy Eating as the basic triumvirate of good health (Reference: The Promise of Sleep, Dr William C. Dement). As a Neurologist and Sleep Physician who sees many patients with brain disorders, psychological problems and sleep disturbances, she strongly believes that all 3 are closely linked:  “Scientific evidence has shown that the lack of quality sleep leads to impaired brain performance, emotional and physical health issues and if extreme, may even shorten lifespan. Yet many continue to shortchange themselves on sleep, without realizing that sleep cannot be sacrificed without significant personal cost. It is unfortunate that so many people do not yet realize how important healthy sleep is to optimal physical & emotional health, and work & school performance. Many more would achieve their full potential if they understood how to incorporate good sleeping habits in addition to regular exercise and healthy eating into their daily lives.”

Ongoing efforts are targeted toward promoting Sleep education for the public, introducing formal and organized teaching of Sleep Medicine into our undergraduate and graduate medical school curriculum, and attracting more healthcare professionals to the field of Sleep Medicine to improve standards of management of sleep disorders and quality of research. Dr Lim believes that an important starting point to improve outcomes is clinical research, identifying the nature and scope of existing sleep health problems which affect our population, especially since sleep related research data, including large population surveys on sleep related habits and symptoms, are generally lacking in Asian populations like Singapore.

To improve Neurology & Sleep health and awareness, Dr Lim continues her educational efforts through her clinical and teaching responsibilities at the Singapore Neurology & Sleep Centre and through various professional and public forums working with a multidisciplinary team of professionals.

Drawing upon her nearly 3 decades of experience in the practice of Medicine, subspecializing in the fields of Neurology, Neuromuscular Diseases and Sleep Medicine, Dr Lim pursues with a passion the discovery of paths to physical and psychological well-being based on both spiritual and human wisdom. Her ongoing fascination is with understanding how the human mind and emotions impact on physical health – Dr Lim is especially interested in studying the emotional and spiritual roots of disease, and the sleep phenomenon of dreams. “It has been a privilege to be called to the healing profession, one of the greatest blessings in my life. Going forward, I seek deeper wisdom and discernment, which will enable me to help patients holistically on their healing journey toward restoration of health, wellbeing and a fruitful, abundant life”: Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8: 32).
